Senator John McCain is humble, yet forthright, when asked about his marriage and then divorce from his first wife, Carol Shepp. They were married in 1965. She had two children, Doug and Andrew, by a previous marriage, who he adopted. They had a daughter, Sidney Ann, in 1966. McCain was sent to Viet Nam in 1967. Carol McCain was involved in a serious car accident while McCain was imprisoned in the “Hanoi Hilton.” She was hospitalized for 6 months, and ultimately underwent 23 surgeries. While recovering, her children stayed with relatives. After McCain returned from Viet Nam, they both underwent simultaneous physical therapy. But there were extramarital affairs after he returned in 1973 from Viet Nam. The marriage slowly disintegrated, although by external appearances everything seemed fine. (more…)

Oddly, Senator Barack Obama’s stumbling on the name on the bracelet of a deceased soldier, did not seem to make much of a difference to American mainstream media. Not a lot was said after the debate. Granted, the anxiety that may accompany being on the nation’s stage being peppered with questions and being expected to perform flawlessly, may be overwhelming. But hey, this would be small fry anxiety compared to being in the middle of a major national or international crisis. Mainstream media focuses on other details.
