National Prayer Day Sans President

National Day of Prayer at the White House of times before.  George Bush typically had Christian and Jewish leaders over, a breakfast was served, and prayers were offered.  Oh yeah.  And there was an early morning formal religious service the President would typically attend.  No problem.

Now, Obama: No Prayer in the White House at Newsmax.  He will however go as far as signing a proclamation asking Americans to pray.  And he will pray solo.  Wow.

Perhaps he wanted to be more like Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush who also only signed proclamations.  Maybe he did not want to interfere with his morning work-out.  Maybe he wanted to sleep in.  Wait a minute.  He has not even selected a church in D.C. yet.

Maybe he wanted to refrain from appearing biased, considering that his administration has asked dismissal of a lawsuit by an aetheist group in Wisconsin claiming the National Day of Prayer violates constitutional separation of church and state.  Do note that many Republicans have joined that fight for dismissal.  Surprising partisanship there, eh?

Refer now to history.  Think back to Lyndon B. Johnson who had no problem openly reconciling the benefit of prayer for both leaders and all Americans.  From Think Exist

“The men who have guided the destiny of the United States have found the strength for their tasks by going to their knees. This private unity of public men and their God is an enduring source of reassurance for the people of America.”

Johnson’s words of wisdom provide refreshing light on prayer on this day.  But as Gateway Pundit noted, Figures. Obama Skipping National Prayer Day Ceremony
