As usual, the headlines say it all. The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is now memorable for a not so memorable reason. Comedienne Wanda Sykes makes a joke about Rush Limbaugh being the 20th hijacker on the 9/11 attacks. And then she hopes his kidneys will fail. And saying that he needs waterboarding.
Many might say, one would have had to have been there to have appreciated the moment. Doubtful. The loss of so many lives in the greatest terroristic attack against the United States on its own soil, is no laughing matter. Ever. Comparing any American to a terrorist in that light, even one with fundamental political beliefs that are contradictory, is not an excuse to make that person a target for such a personal attack. The fact that Barack Obama, as a guest at the dinner, and worst as the president of the United States, freely laughed along and commiserated his pleasure with fellow guests, demonstrates his poor judgment for approving this comedienne’s incendiary and disrespectful display. A poor reflection indeed. A mother would be ashamed of both of them, and all those at the dinner that merrily enjoyed.
Is it not possible to do comedy without personal attacks?
Thank God For Barack Obama and Wanda Sykes. NQ. With videos.
I will give a comedian some leeway, normally. But Wanda Sykes crossed a fucking line here. And it was not even remotely funny. I am not a Rush Limbaugh fan. I think he is a self-important propagandist. But this attack on him is wrong and worrying.
O.K. For Obama to Laugh At Jokes About Torturing Rush Limbaugh and His Kidney’s Failing? - But NOT O.K. to hope Obama’s plan to turn America into a socialist state fails? Flopping Aces.
Shocker!… AP Covers For Obama Laughing at Limbaugh Death Joke. Gateway Pundit.
Must have hit hard enough to even have CBS’s Smith: Olbermann Thought Sykes Joke ‘In Bad Taste’. Newsbusters.
No Laughing Matter. NRO.
Laughter can be a beautiful thing, a great gift in difficult times… Laughter can also be something vicious, coming from a very dark place.
Jokes about our former president and vice president. Jokes about interrogation. Jokes about gay marriage. Jokes about abstinence. Jokes about terrorism. Jokes about addiction. Jokes about abortion and embryo destruction. And the president of the United States was the headliner, responsible for some but not all of the shamefulness of the night.
David Feherty shouldn’t get pass for tasteless joke – but neither should Wanda Sykes. NY Daily News. Does the critical turn-the-table test to see if it passes.
But what if Limbaugh, white talk show host, goes on the air and says that Sykes, black comedian, is about half-a-terrorist and that, oh by the way, he hopes she dies? Is he allowed to say he’s just an entertainer, and tell everybody to lighten up?
Not funny: Barack Obama laughs at Wanda Sykes “joke” about wanting Rush Limbaugh dead. The Telegraph.
That’s way, way beyond reasoned debate or comedy and Obama’s reaction to it was astonishing.
Imagine if a comedian ”joked” that Obama was a terrorist who was guilty of treason and should be tortured and allowed to die. There would justifiably be an outcry.
And Obama laughing when someone wishes Limbaugh dead? Hard to take from the man who promised a new era of civility and elevated debate in Washington.
Yes. Role reversal certainly shines the light on the ugly spectacle of what was said, and what was digested as jest, by some folks who really should know better and be acting commensurate with their postion. Unless of course, they truly believe what was said.
