Britain considers plan to get donations through ATMs.
A great idea. This should help get money to charities a little more expeditiously. Could it happen in America?

When I go to the grocery store they ask every time I check out if I would like to donate a dollar or more to a particular charity. I used to do it when it first started, but now it’s to the point of being annoying. It’s embarrassing to say “no” because I feel like a heel, but oftentimes they are charities that I don’t give to. I feel bad for those who are on such a tight budget that every penny counts and then they are being confronted with someone asking them to give more than their bill.
At least at an atm machine, you are alone and it’s private. In a grocery store you are being asked by a real person and in front of those standing in line waiting behind you. Saying “no” isn’t so easy.
Yes, an ATM is discreet.
Do not feel bad about saying no. You are already giving charitably in a different manner. That is where the truth behind, “I/We gave at the office,” and “I/We donate directly every month already.” come to light. Say it truthfully and no one can ever challenge you on it.
