Effort to sanitize Twain is pure insanity. Tony Norman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, on Mark Twain’s famous book.
Removing “nigger” from the pages of one of our most prophetic and subversive novels creates a space for even more glibness and self-deception by preserving the conceit that we’re a society that doesn’t “see” color.
Twain once described “Huckleberry Finn” as “a book of mine where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision and conscience suffers defeat.”
Taking words out that convey the entirety of meaning to the time period, completely dismantle the foundation of the story. Just Let Huck Finn tell it as it was. FT.

PC has gone too far.
Agree with Mcnorman- this is getting crazy when we rewrite works of literature. Twain penned a very accurate description of life in that time- including his use of dialogue. How will our children know how things have changed if we delete all literary evidence?
What next? Dumbing down Shakespeare? Oh wait- they already have- Cliff Notes.
Dumbing down. A favorite pasttime of PC people who must somehow be ashamed or fearful of what has already happened. Can’t change facts, so they just change the way the story is told. Sterilize it. Yeah.
