Hurrah For Forced Obama Youth Corps

Didn’t think it was gonna happen?  Well here it is now.  Barack Obama talking about this horrible government debt, yet already spending your tax dollars by creating another governmental entity called Change.gov.  Well, that’s another story.

The real story here is what he has been talking about all along.  The creation of mandatory community service.  Oddly, it seems voluntary community service never seemed to be enough for Obama, who now wants America to be served for free by all.  More promised handouts courtesy of Obama and clan.  He calls it service.

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Bear in mind that community service has always been an option for America throughout its history.  Citizens have participated freely and to the extent possible, through personal labor, time, and expense, and NEVER had to be forced into doing so.

Obama’s goal to expand national service programs may open doors of opportunity, but the idea of forced community service reeks of egocentrism and the personal need to make a historical mark in the annals of Socialism.  Americans who have been contributing their service freely to their communities will not be affected.  Americans who have not, may well be sentenced to Obama’s “service,” however.

Perhaps the constitutional lawyer Obama needs a salient reminder in the lesson  he forgot from law school.  The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865, the 13th amendment abolished slavery in the United States and provides that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”.

Gateway Pundit, Cold FurySweetness and Light, and McNorman have some choice opinions on the matter.

Update.

Seems like Obama got an earful about his “required” service, Little Green Footballs reveals.  It was enought to go scrubbing the word/concept “required” straight out of the Change.gov site, that earlier today read as above, but now reads as follows.

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Screen shots at Sweetness and Light.

Suddenly, all mention of “required” has been disappeared. And the college tuition incentive has been added.

Maybe this is what they mean by “change.”
