Conservative Father And Liberal Daughter Have A Talk About Fairness

A father and daughter who over time seem to have diverged, have a chat about what is fair and what is not.  Also at the Gold Coast Chronicle.

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn’t even have time for a boyfriend, and didn’t really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, “How is your friend Audrey doing?” She replied, “Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She’s always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn’t even show up for classes because she’s too hung over.”

Her wise father asked his daughter, “Why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.”

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father’s suggestion, angrily fired back, “That’s a crazy idea, how would that be fair! I’ve worked really hard for my grades! I’ve invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!”

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, “Welcome to the conservative side of the fence.”

Conservatives Rebound At Washington CPAC

Conservatism is the future of America.  Telegraph.

So wrote Niles Gardiner, Washington-based foreign affairs analyst for the UK news outlet.  He attended the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C., and noted a few things.

What a difference a year makes.  A year ago, the liberal media in America (i.e. about 90% of the print press) had written off conservatism as dead and buried.

Nice to see journalists from within can see the obviously slanted tilt of the press.

….the least popular American president of the modern era at such an early stage of the presidency.

Is it that obvious?  The liberal agenda would still have everyone thinking otherwise, except a good number of people are not buying the hope and change routine anymore.  Those who never succumbed to a Pied Piper have remained steadfast.

…the United States is not only a conservative nation, but one that is becoming significantly more conservative in the face of the Obama administration.

The perennial campaigning by the complaint and excuse-laden current administration and its sycophants, has now been served notice, no less than on its own turf.

Adopt A Terrorist Program Now Taking Applications

Email in circulation

Attention folks interested in opening up your home to a lad far from home.  Adopt A Terrorist program may be the solution to that yearning desire to give unto others.  And be given something in return.   Canadian version found at The Politic.  Also at Soda Head.

A lady wrote a lot of letters to the government, complaining about the treatment of captive insurgents (terrorists) being held in Afghanistan’s National Correctional System facilities.

She received back the following reply:

Dear Concerned Citizen,

Thank you for your recent letter expressing your profound concern of treatment of the Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorists captured by our forces who were subsequently transferred to the Afghanistan Government and are currently being held by Afghan officials in Afghanistan’s National Correctional System facilities.

Our administration takes these matters seriously and your opinions were heard loud and clear here.

You will be pleased to learn, thanks to the concerns of citizens like yourself; we are creating a new department here at the Department of National Defense, to be called ‘Liberals Accept Responsibility for Killers’ program, or L.A.R.K. for short.

In accordance with the guidelines of this new program, we have decided to divert one terrorist and place him in your personal care.

Your personal detainee has been selected and is scheduled for transportation under heavily armed guard to your residence next Monday.

Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mahmud (you can just call him Ahmed) is to be cared for pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your letter of complaint..

It will likely be necessary for you to hire some assistant caretakers.. We will conduct weekly inspections to ensure that your standards of care for Ahmed are commensurate with those you so strongly recommend in your letter.

Although Ahmed is a sociopath and extremely violent, we hope that your sensitivity to what you described as his ‘attitudinal problem’ will help him overcome these character flaws.

Perhaps you are correct in describing these problems as mere cultural differences..

We understand that you plan to offer counseling and home schooling.

Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers.

We advise that you do not ask him to demonstrate these skills at your next yoga group.

He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless (in your opinion) this might offend him.

Ahmed will not wish to interact with you or your daughters (except sexually) since he views females as a subhuman form of property.

This is a particularly sensitive subject for him and he has been known to show violent tendencies around women who fail to comply with the new dress code that he will recommend as more appropriate attire.

I’m sure you will come to enjoy the anonymity offered by the burka over time. Just remember that it is all part of ‘respecting his culture and religious beliefs’ as described in your letter.

Thanks again for your concern. We truly appreciate it when folks like you keep us informed of the proper way to do our job and care for our fellow man.

You take good care of Ahmed and remember we’ll be watching.

Good luck and God bless you.

Scary Details In Senate Health Care Bill

The Health Bill Is Scary.  WSJ.

Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) is also a physician.  As such, his interpretation of the current Senate health care bill is a salient explanation of the hidden dangers that belie current legislation that is being categorized as emergent in need of passage.  He exposes the truth behind the Democrat supported bill that was passed in December 2009.  The bill which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)  is insistent must now be reconciled with the House version delivered by Madam Nancy Pelosi, both fueled by President Barack Obama.  No sense in letting the details emerge from behind closed doors.

Why let the public know the  frightening details this early?  Be afraid.  Be very afraid.

the Reid bill (in sections 3403 and 2021) explicitly empowers Medicare to deny treatment based on cost. An Independent Medicare Advisory Board created by the bill—composed of permanent, unelected and, therefore, unaccountable members—will greatly expand the rationing practices that already occur in the program.

Section 6301 of the Reid bill creates new comparative effectiveness research (CER) programs. CER panels have been used as rationing commissions in other countries such as the U.K., where 15,000 cancer patients die prematurely every year according to the National Cancer Intelligence Network.

the Reid bill depends on the recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force in no fewer than 14 places. This task force was responsible for advising women under 50 to not undergo annual mammograms. The administration claims the task force recommendations do not carry the force of law, but the Reid bill itself contradicts them in section 2713. The bill explicitly states, on page 17, that health insurance plans “shall provide coverage for” services approved by the task force. This chilling provision represents the government stepping between doctors and patients. When the government asserts the power to provide care, it also asserts the power to deny care.

the bill expands Medicaid eligibility to 133% of the poverty level, that too will lead to rationing. Because Washington bureaucrats have created a system that underpays doctors, 40% of doctors already restrict access to Medicaid patients, and therefore ration care.

will produce skyrocketing premiums and reduced care for everyone. My state’s own insurance commissioner, a Democrat, recently confirmed this concern to me in a letter noting that “the result will be higher insurance rates due to a higher percentage of insured being higher risk/expense individuals.”

The call to Repeal the Health Bill seems then quite reasonable after all.

Winning Health Care Reform At All Costs

Charles Hurt at NYP summarized the current Senate dealings on health care reform well.  The same points raised repeatedly here and here, with the all too predictable and frightening end result forseen that will be forced upon America.

Just win, baby! (Even if the people lose),

In less than 12 months, though, all the Democrats’ promises of honesty, openness and common sense have sunken into the same old sordid sewer that has forever defined Washington as the loathsome, dishonest and wasteful place that it is.

The result is the health-care train wreck.

This is what happens when politicians go from idealism to survivalism.

They no longer care what they promised voters. They don’t care what the public wants. And they don’t care about what is right.

All they care about is a victory so that they can claim to have accomplished something.

For Howard Dean, the physician and former chair of the Democratic National Committee, to actually publicly state “Kill the Senate bill,” is quite astounding given his deep Democratic alliances.

This is essentially the collapse of health care reform in the United States Senate. Honestly the best thing to do right now is kill the Senate bill, go back to the House, start the reconciliation process, where you only need 51 votes and it would be a much simpler bill.

Senate Majority Leader Equates Health Care Opposition With Slavery Support

Reid Compares Opponents of Health Care Reform to Supporters of Slavery.  Fox.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took his GOP-blasting rhetoric to a new level Monday, comparing Republicans who oppose health care reform to lawmakers who clung to the institution of slavery more than a century ago.

The Nevada Democrat, in a sweeping set of accusations on the Senate floor, also compared health care foes to those who opposed women’s suffrage and the civil rights movement — even though it was Sen. Strom Thurmond, then a Democrat, who unsuccessfully tried to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and it was Republicans who led the charge against slavery.

Senate Republicans on Monday called Reid’s comments “offensive” and “unbelievable.”

Reid certainly lacks respectability by bringing historical blight into modern day Senate activities.

Perhaps Reid is completely unaware of the concerns of conservatives, moderates, liberals, Independents, Democrats, and Republicans who see through the smokescreen of the current health care reform they are trying to pass.  He would be wise to thoroughly review and answer the legitimate questions being raised by current Senate Republicans and others.  Otherwise, and it looks mighty unfavorable of Reid that he is equating their issues along the same vein as supporters of slavery.

Health Care Bill Will Allow Illegals To Obtain Health Insurance By Not Excluding Them

Health bills fail to block illegals from coverage.  Washington Times.

Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants could receive health care coverage from their employers under the bills winding their way through Congress, despite President Obama’s explicit pledge that illegal immigrants would not benefit.

The House bill mandates, and the Senate bill strongly encourages, businesses to extend health care coverage to all employees. But the bills do not have exemptions to screen out illegal immigrants, who usually obtain jobs by using false identities and are indistinguishable from legal workers.

Surprised?  From the Democrats and their chief community organizer who pledged vehemently otherwise.

The devil is in the details, i.e., it is not what is written in the bill, it is what is not being explicitly excluded from the bill.  As usual for a smoke and screen, dog and pony show.
